Course Content
This course provides candidates with the opportunity to study Greek and Roman civilisation through a range of topics. It encourages candidates to develop a range of analytic, interpretative and communication skills that can be applied to a wide variety of subjects.
AS
Qualification consists of three modules:
- Greek Tragedy 1: Aeschylus’s Agamemnon, Sophocles Electra & Oedipus the King
- Greek Epic: Homer’s Odyssey
- Greek Art & Architecture: Vase Paintings & Sanctuaries
A2
Qualification consists of a further three modules, two of which are synoptic:
- Greek Tragedy 2: Euripides Media, Hippolytus & Bacchae (with comparisons to AS Greek Tragedy 1)
- Roman Epic: Virgil’s Aeneid (With comparisons to AS Greek Epic)
- Greek Art & Architecture: Free standing sculpture
There is the opportunity for one examined unit to be replaced by coursework either at AS or A2. This would take the form of a written dissertation of about 3,000 words.
Assessment
Each module is equally weighted and has a 1hr30min examination.
All question papers require candidates to display their knowledge and understanding of aspects of Classical Civilisation through answering:
- Context questions (commenting on extracts from texts or items of material culture)
- Discursive essay questions

The specifications are suitable for any candidate interested in the Greek and Roman civilisations, especially those wishing to read Classics at a higher level.
Extra-Curriculum Activities
Past trips have included:
- Theatre trips to see Greek Tragedies
- Visits to the British Museum.
- Lecture days with ‘Sovereign Education’
- Field Trip to Pompeii and Greece
Costs: Approx. £600 for 8-day trip
