Examination Board: Edexcel

Course Content
To give students a broad range of interest, we continue with the disciplines of Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.

The AS qualification consists of three modules:
Core Mathematics 1 (C1) and Core Mathematics 2 (C2) ( and Statistics 1 (S1). The pure mathematics modules C1 and C2 include the following topics of study: further algebra, co-ordinate geometry, series and sequences, calculus, trigonometry, logarithms and exponentials, further angle work, the binomial expansion. The Statistics module (S1) looks at the presentation and summary of data, probability, discrete random variables and the normal distribution.

The A2 qualification consists of a further three modules:
Core Mathematics 3 (C3) and Core Mathematics 4 (C4) and Mechanics 1 (M1). The pure mathematics modules C3 and C4 will cover further calculus, algebra, vectors, further trigonometry, functions and graphs, co-ordinate geometry and numerical methods. The Mechanics module (M1) consists of vectors and applications, kinematics and statics of a particle, dynamics of a particle and moments.

Assessment
AS – Three exams: Core mathematics 1, Core mathematics 2,  Statistics 1.
A2 – Three exams: Core mathematics 3, Core mathematics 4, Mechanics 1
The length of each exam is 1 hr 30 min.

Specific Requirements
All students must achieve A/A* in their GCSE and have a good grasp of number and algebra.  In rare exceptions, students achieving a grade B may be permitted to join the course.

Costs
The cost of a text book is about £10. The total cost of books per academic year is about £30.
The course will provide students with the necessary foundation and enthusiasm to study mathematics at university level or other degree courses with significant mathematics content.
