Course Aims
- To develop an appropriate level of competence in Latin and a sensitive and analytical approach to language generally.
- To develop awareness of the influence of the classical languages on the languages of today and of their distinctive modes of expression.
- To read, understand and make an informed personal response to literature in the original language.
- To make an informed response based on evidence from the material studied using written and, where appropriate, other means of communication.
- To progress to Higher Education courses in Latin, whether linguistic or non-linguistic.
Course Content
For the A-Level course, students study the following:
- Linguistic Content.
- Prescribed Texts.
Assessments
All students are assessed with a terminal examination in each of the units studied:
AS—Literature, Translation
A2—Literature, Translation, Composition or Comprehension
Specific requirements
Students are expected to have studied Latin at GCSE level and to have obtained a B grade.
Extra-curricular activities
Students are expected to attend one-day conferences in order to familiarise themselves with the topics covered and examination skills needed.
Costing
Students must buy study books and will participate in the financial costs of conferences and trips.
